Outreach

I am passionate about giving more people the opportunity to explore the myths, history and culture of the ancient world.

I regularly give school talks in person and online on a wide range topics, including:
  • 'Genre and Gender in Greek and Roman Poetry'
  • 'Classics Beyond the Classical'
  • 'Friends and Family in War'
  • 'Poetry and the Olympics: Past & Present'
  • 'Odysseus' Revenge: Right or Wrong?'
  • 'Studying Classics at University'

In addition, I have produced several videos and written articles that distil my research for non-specialist audiences, including an Omnibus article on immortality and the Iliad (2021), a #30SecondClassics video on Homer’s Iliad for Cambridge (2018), and a social media video on Sappho's love poetry for LGBT+ History Month in collaboration with Cambridge University’s Communications department and Talitha Kearey (2021). I have also sought to improve access to the subject as a member of the Cambridge Classics Faculty's Access and Outreach Committee (2020-21) and as the lead organiser of the Wadham Classics Summer School on “Gender and Sexuality in the Ancient World” (2022).

Since 2015, I have collaborated with the Young People's Puppet Theatre, a charity that encourages creativity and teamwork in primary schools. I have written a puppet version of 'Theseus and the Minotaur' for their year-long projects with year 6 classes in the UK. I particularly enjoy attending each class' final performance and talking with them beforehand about ancient myth and culture.
